The most significant factor in determining your degree of success is the approach. Once I started learning Excel I took an educator-directed novice course. Once I was more comfortable with navigation and the basic functionality, I started to go through every menu item by piece to discover what it did, and tested each item away to see what it would actually do on a live spreadsheet in contrast to merely seeing a fixed example.
